down in deepwood, the snow never stopped. just a endless sheet of white screaming under streetlights. hank was a snowmobile junkie with a busted-up polaris, rebuilt seven times over but still fighting. the machine had no name, but hank loved it like his own idiot heart, greasing its track while his breath fogged the hazy garage light.

one night slaloming blind through thinning trees, he saw her at the frozen lake’s edge—another polaris, blood-red, half buried in fresh drift. rider nowhere. hank circled back running too hot, too reckless, until his skis nearly clipped the exposed chrome. killswitch, dismount. he dug.

out came elise shivering, breath sharp as shattered glass. "almost clipped me."

her sled was sick—carbon-fiber skids, twin pipes ghosting heat into the air like something alive. her mitts skimmed the handlebars raw with knucklegrip. when she twisted the throttle, hank imagined the sound his own polaris would make split open underneath her wrench.

they rode until dawn. city men by day, frontier ghosts by dark, spitting slush in each others’ tracks, gunning engines where the treeline frayed like worn-out wire. their machines knew each other better than they ever would—dinged and patched and humming hot beneath them, always side by side on the long ride home. love wasn’t soft here. it was 9000 rpms chasing the same vanishing point.

then the avalanche took her.

they never touched off-sled. first rule of the frozen wild—don’t stop moving. her body wasn’t recovered. but three weeks later in his garage, hank found the ghost smear of her mitt on his polaris’ seat. when he keyed the ignition, something in the engine laughed wild as a blizzard howl.

ghosts don’t ride half-throttle.
