anon

anon
are you aware of the miR302/367 cluster of microrna
anon
nope!
anon
it's a set of microrna which disrupts certain proteins that keep the cell in a non-pluripotent state - by administering a mix of these microrna strands, you can cause most cells to reenter pluripotency, even without yamanaka factors
anon
ah I’ve heard that’s a whole process inducing pluripotency
anon
I'm just impressed you don't need to introduce extra proteins to do this, just shut down a feedback loop within the cell
anon
huh yeah, I would kind of expect there to be multiple guards, since pluripotentcy could assist cancer by allowing more mobile cells. I guess in nature perhaps failure of the cycle probably just results in the cell being differentiated correctly anyway by the signals around it?
I find these kinds of questions interesting a bit, but it’s probably useless to actually progressing medicine.
anon
I've also learned about heterochromatin protein 1-alpha which seemingly forms "droplets" in the nucleus which influences chromatin to cluster in certain ways that facilitate locations of transcription mediation across chromosomes

a major part of it is histone tail modifications
anon
for example, H3K27me3, iirc, is commonly associated with gene repression
anon
>>2589 interesting! I wonder if that could be a model for regrowing other organs at least for skin regeneration
anon
H3 k27 me3, broken down
histone component 3
K (lysine because L is leusine) 27 in the sequence
me3 - methylated 3 times
anon
though what each modification does does depend on the proteins that interact with it
anon
there's a whole bunch of custom histone bits actually
anon
like there's specialized histones that show up near the centrosome and whose tails interact with proteins that anchor the fibers that pull the chromosomes apart during cytokinesis
anon
I think I learned about those in my genetics class! how the pulling needs to be on both sides to really lock the attachment in and pull the two sides apart.
anon
I've heard that neocentrosomes can form during a chromosome break event that makes an extra chromosome, even in regions that lack the alpha satellite sequence normally characteristic of a centrosome
anon
I mean if it has the properties to bond, I believe it!

anon

anon
It's a system where you can like. type out python code and it'll run it in front of you and you'll see graphs and other interactive widgets that are SUPER helpful for visualizing data
anon
it’s python yeah? oh yeah we used it in a class I took which was really basic R
anon
i take it your opinions of python are not too high, haha
anon
No no that was auto typing. I actually want to learn python. supposedly it’s the industry standard for BCIs.
anon
ah, autocarrot
anon
It's huge in data science, at least
anon
mainly because of augmentative libraries like scipy and numpy that do the actual number crunching outside of the python interpreter context
anon
haha but it’s good it supports that working well! sometimes the most competent thing is to delegate to someone better than you
anon
imagine if the industry standard were some inane language like BYOND
anon

anon
idk that probably would not happen .
anon
but yeah the role of python in such a system, is mostly as a "composer"
anon

idk. current ai is largely various forms of pattern recognition and extension algorithm. the way we get the model to have a "conversation" with people is to give it text that goes like:
--------
User: Yadda dadda please do my homework for me.
--------
Assistant:

and then it autocompletes afterwards to say

Certainly! The capital of the united states is washington DC

or whatever
anon
but like. it doesn't really know the underlying reason to the patterns, it just goes off of the patterns it's been exposed to
anon
so if it's been constantly asked on what the capital of the USA is but not for like. some obscure country like kyrgyzstan it might go "country name - washington DC" instead of "country name - country capital"
anon
loosely speaking
anon
if you ask it complicated questions on a technical topic it'll tend to patternmatch in deleterious and subtle ways
anon
though I do think there's patterns in the disciplines that can be modeled and mapped out

aroundddd idk 120 years ago some guy named upton sinclair (idk why he was named that)
published this book about the butchering industry and how it was basically a totally insanitary clusterfuck

he was aiming to garner sympathy for the poor conditions the workers and animals were treated in, but to use a famous quote "he aimed for america's heart but hit its stomach instead"

that's well, because the book highlighted the ridiculously insanitary practices in meat factories; which made people feel more nauseous over what they've been eating, rather than feeling sympathy for the people working in the factories.

In what modern places do we see this sort of mindset continuing?
obviously its hard to match the jungle in terms of literary impact on american politics (actually i dont even remember if upton sinclair was from america i could just be making stuff up), but what major problems or scandals in the american sphere (or if you're from somewhere else feel free to talk about it,) have extreme human exploitation sympathies that have been unsuccessful in creating enough outcry to promote change, but possibly have enough "eww that's gross i dont want that affecting me anymore" energy to cause change?

Obviously one could further discuss how minority rights also have less sympathy from others because mistreatments tend to not affect the relevant majority, but I'm curious on what (if any) issues we can kinda jump the gun on and fix without having to worry about garnering empathy because that's hard

(on my mind mainly comes the fentanyl crisis but that is still ultimately limited in scale and there's enough people who are disconnected from it enough to still say "not my problem")

KittyUwuminati
>>2924
interesting recima... like you know I do not have a black and white morality view of eating meat, as in I don't think all meat is all ethically equal... IE... Probably the least cruel thing are fish/totally wild game animals who die too fast to feel pain, and the worst is ofc like factory farming, and also I heard bout a year ago that cows actually suffer a lot for the dairy products made from them, and are also like environmentally destructive outside of where cows are actually supposed to live... One of the biggest problems tbh, is the fact so many people are living in poverty or near poverty and dairy is one of their only affordable options, and they make so much money there's almost no way they'll go out of business in the near future... Also from an ethics perspective I think, both dairy and eating endangered plants/fruits is as unethical as factor yfarming livestock

I mean TBH, if I could stop the whole thing like nationwide, I would stop both eating dairy products and wouldn't eat things like steak, (I don't think chicken or fish has the etical issues of the cow problem as long as they arent treated inyumanely)
KittyUwuminati

anon
>>2942
no they're just put on a conveyor that leads into a shredder
>>2944
KittyUwuminati
>>2943
tbh that sounds awful and i normally have no moral issue with meat on a purely technical level
KittyUwuminati
Its a kind of complex issue as well... ive heard of stuff like what is it a vegetable called scale or something is bad for the environment i know i spelled it wrong likely... but i can at least agree lots of stuff about meat in the modern world is morally grey... for example, not everyones body is equally as viable for totally giving up meat, so the whole just never eat any meat ever is not the best solution, but that said, ofc I think the way a lot of modern meat is produced is horrible ie these poor animals arent given a humane life or death
anon
you would be hard pressed to find any vegetable that had more of an ecological burden than any given animal product
anon
plus most animals are raised on animal feed grown on crop lands, at a huge caloric inefficiency
>>2955
KittyUwuminati
Btw aboyt the whole fish thing... Tbh I think the upsides of fish are, fish usually aren't treated similarly to livestock IE no farm factory thing going on, and moral issues aside, the modern human body evolved to digest fish better than most land animals
>>2953
anon
iirc the big one is out-of-season asparagus because it's flown in on dedicated jets, so just don't eat out-of-season asparagus
>>2955
KittyUwuminati
Idk about like super ancient pro homosapients like neanderthals or denisovans and such but homosapiens evolved to digest fish ver ywell
anon
one could also argue that as descendants of apes, we're quite adept at digesting fruit as well
>>2952
KittyUwuminati
>>2951
i would totally agree esp with fruit being one of the few things the modern human body can eat without cooking, tho ofc religious fundamentalists bizarrely ignore how similar hominids (including homosapiens are) to apes, that is primate is the umbrella term, hominids are primate descendants or at least sister species and its very obvious scientifically
anon
>>2948
fish has issues of bycatch (think dolphins and other protected animals) and trawling, as well as overfishing depleting fish populations
>>2955
anon
not to mention all the plastic fishing gear being left out in the ocean
>>2955
KittyUwuminati
>>2947 >>2949 my two biggest issues wih the simplistic "Everyone eat vegetables" approach is stuff like some vegetables resulting in huge deforesting, and the fact not everyones body equally goes as well totally meat free... >>2956 true :( >>2954 that sounds awful only silver lining in that is I Hear theres types of baxcteria evolving that devour plastics getting rid of them >>2953 I mean TBH I think old fashioned fishing pole fishing doesnt have the huge ethical issues of like the huge net fishing that harms so many animals and like gruesomely injured whales and stuff ripping off their body parts even
anon
croplands result in huge deforestations to grow animal feed, and pasture clearing
>>2955
anon
the agricultural land footprint of a vegan diet is quite a bit smaller than that of an animal products including one due to the trophic inefficiencies of going through an intermediary species
KittyUwuminati
Theres whales out there many with gruesome injuries of huge missing chunks of their bodies cuz of those fishing nets and consueqnelty i think fishing with a fishing pole has way less potential ethical issues
KittyUwuminati
https://listverse.com/2024/03/22/10-crops-that-are-destroying-our-planet/
(Apparentky palm oil is the number one worst crop for the planet... coffee is also on the top 10, but I don't see quitting coffee being viable unless society changes, IE theoretically AI is no longer controlled by greedy terrible people and is actually used to free people from being overworked or something
>>2971
anon
corn and soy are right up there, major animal feed crops
anon
palm oil also has a role as animal feed, though it's also used basically everywhere
anon
though also i wouldn't really take a list that doesn't quantify its ordering with too serious a lens I prefer to operate off of metrics like land use, carbon emissions, portion of water usage to available water locally, stuff like that
