oh yeah france and denmark are totally similar in a lot of ways. i think a key part is that they share core beliefs. whereas with the russians, the state-sanctioned media spreads many ideas that are not compatible with what western european media tends to teach. don't get me wrong, there's still propaganda, france denies being a colonial power etc, but there is basic agreement on the ground rules, if that makes sense.

Meiji Japan is like the size of a nickel and already had the means to centralize. Africa is an entire continent. And again, there are parts of Africa that are generally good. Not perfect, but like decent. As for strongmen, you often find a story that goes something like this "Guy gets in with the support of everybody, guy feels threatened, guy begins trying to secure the loyalty of individual ethnic groups, guy is basically reduced to being the despot of a city" Tribal identities are a background on which these power struggles occur, but often times the objective of those in charge isn't really centered around securing some kind of cultural supremacy.

The French absolutely bled themselves in Algeria and Indochina. Because lefties have been sort of handed the pen on post-colonial history, tons of it gets chalked up to economics. But the French were not making the, let's say, rational economic decisions in Africa. They were making the decisions that made the French feel like they were still culturally superior and a major colonial power.

fwiw i live in a country that has chosen to remain neutral in the conflict for political reasons and the media very much did cast russia as the aggressor, so i don't think it's all just western propaganda. obviously the local media can't totally be trusted either but yeah. i think it's pretty established it's a war of conquest.
