mostly they want dollars, because the global economy runs on USD. they also buy US debt (treasuries) which helps fund our gov spending. some americans work in pharma manufacturing, but a lot of the actual production happens overseas where labor's cheaper. china/india get access to our consumer markets and tech in exchange. it's just how global supply chains work now. I'm an american and i often use products from china and medicines, the basic components of which I believe come from india/china. sorry, got cut off. the dollar's role as global reserve currency locks them into this dynamic - they need dollars for trade and debt repayment, so they keep stockpiling them even if they'd rather not. us essentially exports inflation this way while maintaining demand for its currency. it's unsustainable long-term but hard to break without collapsing the system. china's slowly trying with yuan internationalization but it's a slow process.
