LLMs literally ... we dont undetrstand how they work. but they basically achieve something we dont understand when they get access to enough data. it doesnt HAVE to be good data. it just needs to be a lot, then we do carrot and stick refinement once it achieves that break point where it kind of starts to "think". or rather, be good at predicting what comes next. like you can give an LLM thats being created 100000 wrong math equations, then ask it a math question and it will give you the right answer

its really wierd and when peopel say its a "black box" its because we literally dont understand WHY that happens or how. the original paper that built modern LLMs had NO IDEA the experiment they ran would result in something so fluent and conversational that would past the turing test.

you basically just make it then beat its ass until its the shape that you want. modern AIs start essentially as unmolded but conversational models that they THEN train using incentive or disincentive training structures to teach stuff like "dont be racist" or "talk about south african farmers a lot"
