small thorium reactors at the scale of powering a single home are in the concept phase now, this may exist in the future.
there's also some potential possibility we make a breakthrough in lattice confinement fusion energy eventually, which would take it a step further and let us make like nuclear cars and nuclear helicopters and shit with a little neutron shielding

idr the specifics but thorium reactors are just able to be built much smaller. they're incapable of melting down and most of the size of a nuclear reactor is in its cooling. you can build a small one with a steam loop and a smaller fuel chamber in like, a garage, it just destroys the neighborhood if it melts down. but a thorium one wouldn't have that risk, so it could just bolt onto a home at the size of like, a small room probably.

that's the other nice thing about thorium reactors. uranium is rare and has to be enriched to higher purities so you need a lot of it
thorium is like, 12% of the earth's crust or something high like that, and much easier to enrich

#smartai how much of the earth's crust can we realistically access for mining

The Earth's crust, which averages about 30–50 km thick under continents and 5–10 km under oceans, contains vast mineral resources—but only a fraction is realistically accessible for mining. Several key constraints determine how much we can exploit:

### **1. Depth Limitations**
- **Current Mining Depths**: The deepest mines (e.g., Mponeng Gold Mine in South Africa) extend to ~4 km underground. Beyond this, extreme heat (>60°C), rock pressure, and technical challenges make extraction economically unviable.
- **Future Potential**: With advancing technology (autonomous drilling, deep-earth robotics), we might push to ~5–7 km within decades—still <15% of continental crust.

### **2. Economic & Energy Constraints**
- Ore grades decline with depth; energy costs for excavation/ventilation rise exponentially.
- At >3 km depth, most metals require prohibitively expensive processing due to lower concentrations.

### **3. Oceanic Crust Challenges**
- While oceanic crust holds valuable nodules (manganese, cobalt), deep-sea mining faces:
- Technical hurdles (~4–6 km water depths).
- Environmental regulations limiting exploitation.

### **Realistically Accessible Fraction**
Given current tech & economics:
✔️ **Continental Crust:** ≤0.1% (~top few kilometers).
✔️ **Oceanic Crust:** <<0.01%.

Even optimistically projecting future advances (<10-km drilling or asteroid-like robotic extraction), humanity may never feasibly access >1% of the total crustal mass before transitioning beyond traditional mining paradigms (urban mining/recycling).

Would you like an analysis on unconventional alternatives like mantle-derived minerals?

there's a place for neutral mediators on the orbital ring of the EU like switzerland, which ireland does sometimes occupy. maybe it would be less integrated in a USE and that would be fine.
mainly the continent through to the balkans and eastern europe needs a unified armed forces of some kind to maintain a stronger shared front and protect the internal diplomatic and economic status quos
and also a way to fund this thus why i say a unified tax regime
and a more democratic civil administration so it's not just a military force lording over europe ofc

like, hungary and to a lesser extent poland and a few others are really toeing up on the line of flouting the agreed shared human rights norms for the union

land value tax as the baseline revenue scheme works for pretty much any state context. it reflects economic conditions and disburses costs fairly by economic development very well.
they could also continue the current system of taxing member states, it's just not a good baseline. that system is part of what tanked the first american union under the articles of confederacy; you can't control revenues or their sources adequately
and iirc they only tax like, VAT? which is not very high revenue and pretty bad dead weight loss

everywhere any portion of the LVT at 100% + UBI scheme of georgists has been implemented it's been a huge success
