They were wrong. One of Vanderbilt’s sons-in-law was a former vice president in the Accessory Transit Company and he sued the company, alleging gross mismanagement, the misappropriation of company funds, and illegal stock issues. A judge issued an injunction against the company that prevented them from entering into new contracts or issuing more stock. During that time, the company’s stock continued to decline because investors worried about the company’s future. Throughout that period, Vanderbilt was, through friends and trusted business acquaintances, quietly purchasing as much of the stock as possible – at reduced prices, remember – and eventually regained control of the company from the former partners who had “undertaken to cheat” him while the Commodore tried to take a vacation.
