and the previous theory of investing relies on assumptions that aren't true anymore (buy the s&P and hold)

the assumption behind buying the s&p and holding was that, smart investors would be working out which companies are the top companies worth investing in, and then you would just buy a small piece of each, so you would take less risk, and have less returns but you would have a more guarnteed return. But if you look at the market now, I think a third or more of all investments are in ETFs or the S &P which challenges the assumption, who is actually doing the research on these companies?
