anon
my suspicion is that there is probably a fair number of socialist immigrants that moved to the US, but socialism as a force in politics isn't particularly significant in the US
sæкі
at least generally many more progressive for America positions, due to the window of US politics having been all over and usually further right than many places for quite a long time now

I think that describing the US as further right in the early 20th isn't *really* accurate, more like uh, progressive capitalism is what kind of ruled the day, the ideal of a sort of welfare capitalism, the hardworkin' man that helps his community and such through things like fraternal orders and later on unions, it was around like Reagan that the US went absolutely wacko on it's right wingness

#smartai what is functional neurological symptom disorder, it's relation to trauma and its intersection between psychological and neurological issue

Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FND), formerly known as Conversion Disorder, is a complex neuropsychiatric condition characterized by neurological symptoms—such as motor dysfunction (e.g., weakness, tremors), sensory disturbances (e.g., numbness, blindness), or non-epileptic seizures—that cannot be explained by conventional neurological disease. Instead, these symptoms arise from disruptions in brain functioning at the level of neural networks rather than structural damage.

### **Key Features of FND:**
1. **Neurologically Inconsistent Symptoms** – Clinical findings often defy typical anatomical pathways (e.g., "glove-and-stocking" anesthesia that doesn’t follow dermatomal patterns).
2. **Positive Signs on Examination** – Hoover's sign for functional leg weakness or tremor entrainment tests can distinguish FND from organic disorders.
3. **High Comorbidity with Psychiatric Conditions** – Anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently co-occur with FND.

### **The Trauma Connection**
- A well-documented association exists between psychological trauma and FND development:
- Childhood adversity (**physical/sexual abuse**, neglect) increases vulnerability.
- Acute stressors in adulthood may precipitate symptom onset.
- The prevailing hypothesis suggests that traumatic experiences overwhelm cognitive-emotional processing capacities, leading to maladaptive dissociation and somatization—where distress manifests physically via dysfunctional sensorimotor integration.

### **Psychological vs. Neurological Intersection**
FND sits at the crossroads of mind-brain duality:
1. **Neurobiological Mechanisms:**
- Abnormalities in limbic system connectivity disrupt emotion regulation.
- Hyperactivity in the amygdala heightens threat perception while prefrontal cortex hypoactivity impairs executive control over bodily functions.
- Dysfunctional self-agency networks lead to misattribution of internally generated movements/sensations ("I didn't do this; it happened *to* me").

2. **Psychological Frameworks:**
- Freudian conversion theory proposed unconscious conflicts transforming into somatic symptoms but has limited empirical support today.
- Contemporary models emphasize predictive coding errors where top-down expectations override bottom-up sensory input due to prior trauma conditioning.

3. **Treatment Implications:**
- Multidisciplinary care integrating neurology & psychiatry is essential.
✔️ Psychoeducation reframes symptoms as reversible malfunctions rather than irreversible damage (“hardware intact; software glitch”).
✔️ Cognitive-behavioral therapy targets catastrophic misinterpretation & avoidance behaviors reinforcing disability cycles.)
✔️ Physical rehabilitation rebuilds normal movement patterns disrupted by maladaptive habit formation.)

4.) Emerging research highlights promising neuromodulation techniques like transcranial magnetic stimulation **(TMS)** targeting supplementary motor areas implicated in agency disruption.)

In summary,F ND exemplifies how deeply intertwined psyche soma relationships are — neither purely “in one’s head” nor entirely attributable pathological lesions, yet profoundly real suffering warranting compassionate neuroscience-informed interventions.”

#ai what is transcranial magnetic stimulation and its use in the treatment of conditions like FNSD, for example

transcranial magnetic stimulation (tms) is a noninvasive procedure that uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. it's typically used for treating depression when other treatments haven’t worked.

for functional neurological symptom disorder (fnsd), tms is less commonly used but is being explored as a potential treatment. some studies suggest it might help modulate brain circuits involved in symptoms like seizures or movement disorders when they’re psychogenic in origin. it doesn’t directly treat fnsd itself, but could help alleviate certain symptoms by influencing brain activity. still, evidence is limited and it’s not a standard treatment for this condition yet. most approaches for fnsd focus on psychotherapy, physical therapy, or other neurorehab techniques. hospitals or specialized clinics might offer tms off-label for fnsd in research settings, but it’s experimental.
what is transcranial magnetic stimulation and its use in the treatment of conditions like FNSD, for example

makes me think of, I forget the name for it specifically, but using monitors of brain waves to train and be able to help work on treating issues similarly

I just think the President should be viewed as like... head bureaucrat, at its core, his role is to be an administrator. He doesn't make laws, he enforces them as the head of state. He should be a boring pencil necked nerd.
>>716062
sæкі
also I don't think, if we are to have presidents, that the president should have sole authority to decide all if we can have a law that the people want for example or such
Luca
>>716060
Unfortunately many people's conception of the U.S. government is the opposite, for whatever reason. Probably doesn't help with Trump's recent actions attempting to expand executive power well beyond its original boundaries. Though, if I'm not mistaken, the debate as to the power of the president has been raging since the beginning of the office. I guess that's politics though, people criticize and criticize.
>>716064
sæкі
I don't believe in the idea of a presidential system, but if stuck with it, I'd prefer that they're more accountable to the people, and actually directly chosen by them without all the things making it so that the people don't properly decide it and marginalized groups have less effect on the vote
>>716066
anon
>>716062
It has been a debate since the jump, yes. It's me projecting my ideal on what the system is, the President being a technocrat instead of like a popular guy. All the cool hip popular people belong in congress where they can represent the interests of constituents who are closer to them, the President should be a moderate that merely comes off as competent to the majority of people, instead of a crazy person that is EPIC and BASED to 40% of people

I almost think in order to be President, it should be necessary that you engaged in civil service for a few years, because I FUCKING LOVE THE DEEP STATE YES

it needs to be something yea
sæкі
they should probably also not be someone already of such immense power and such that well

sæкі
yeah
sæкі
someone who's actually pursuing the servant work because its what they want to do, helping things/people or so on and aren't expecting to pursue being president from the start

the gutfeld first bit being "we need to learn from the blacks" just on its own is wack
anon
Oh God, this entire segment reminded me
anon
That like Fox News is killing it ratings wise because Republicans literally do not look anywhere else for news
sæкі
yea
anon
Like legitimately even traditionally "right wing" new outlets such as Forbes and WSJ are generally more often read by democrats than republicans, it's fucking insane
sæкі
also
sæкі
its TV ratings
sæкі
yk
sæкі
yeah
sæкі
the fact that Rupert Murdoch didn't kill the letter story is kinda crazy but also gives some kind of possible credibility that they knew a giant af lawsuit would come and yet they published it when unlikely to at all be in their full interest

>>716091
I think that WSJ knew they were getting sued, but to be quite honest I think that even Murdoch is starting to see Trump as a beast that has grown beyond its size and might even be looking to put it down
sæкі
yeah
sæкі
sorta hedging his bets too with already knowing it probably but also yk
anon
I think that Murdoch is at his core a Goldwater type, I genuinely don't think he is on board with the level of insanity that he's getting
sæкі
lel
anon
Either way, I am really really hoping that the right doesn't just discard the entire thing, because then we are talking a tipping point where the idiots are stronger than the handlers controlling them, and then it is going to get absolutely fucking insane
sæкі
yeh

I recommend the first season (first like 10? or 8? or smth?) episodes of the pod 'it could happen here' for talking about such stuff and the concept of a second American civil war, where the creator predicted a lot of what happened in the coming years, all the way back in 2019
anon
God I really don't want to have to fight in a civil war, I will if it comes down to it, but I don't want to
sæкі
yeh
sæкі
this being the first ep if ever interested
https://podbay.fm/p/it-could-happen-here/e/1553767200
he's a long time conflict journalist who reported from Ukraine in 2016 and in Syria and stuffs
and also does behind the bastards, a history show on the worst people from history into modern day
sæкі
in the first EP he talks about his worry of a 2nd civil war, and he decides to reach out to a bunch of historians and civil war scholars, thinking they'll ignore him or think he's crazy etc
and his growing terror as basically every one of them responds taking it seriously with their own similar worries
sæкі
gonna try and eep in a while

huh, in ref to thing on stream, I didn't know the spare the rod spoil the child thing wasn't actually about corporal punishment originally
sæкі
if true
anon
Oh I missed that, was muted, but oh my god I love talking about legal history
sæкі
nw, its about how
sæкі
the rod was used to fight off wolves from attacking and killing sheep and such, and that if you didn't fight off the wolves with such that the child would be '''spoiled'''
anon
Uh I mentioned it earlier, but Draco's law was revolutionary for its time, along with uh the whole eye for and eye thing that people don't actually udnerstand
anon
Like uh, eye for an eye as it was originally conceived was not to say "oh, you MUST PUNISH AND DESTROY your enemies", it was actually just straight up "if someone robs you, you don't have a right to burn down his farm, kill his children, and take his wife as a concubine, you can rob like the same amount back from him" it was straight up a limitation on how much punishment could be delivered, that has since been sort of flipped around to describe the exact opposite of what it originally existed for
sæкі
lel yeah the sort of flip side of how its been taken
anon
And uh Draconian Law, which Draco's Law was literally one of the first kinda legal codes in its region that held everyone to the same standard, along with ensuring that things weren't just held in oral tradition (so that people could manipulate the law in order to commit crimes and avoid punishment) that has since become associated with brutal legal systems, which admittedly, the punishment for quite a few things was well death, but still, it was a very critical development for laws to be enforced equally across classes and such
anon
Basically like every sort of thing associated with criminal justice and such has just been completely detached from its original meaning because the people who exploited the law prior to the change were butthurt and held the pen
sæкі
>we value freedom of speech so journalists must platform my ideology
>says the great replacement guy

#who is karl popper

karl popper was an austrian-british philosopher known for his work on the philosophy of science and political theory. he's famous for his idea of falsifiability as the key to science—if a theory can't be proven wrong, it's not really science. also wrote "the open society and its enemies," criticizing totalitarianism and defending liberal democracy. basically a big deal in 20th-century thought.
