The thing about Fagen is that a lot of his shit is pretty sardonic, especially if you've ever listened to the Dan. The album itself has a sci-fi theme, he's a pretty big fan of the sci-fi literature from the period he grew up, among other authors like William Burroughs and Nabokov. But the titular vehicle "Kamakiri" of the Kamakiriad is a like weird car that's all futuristic and comes with all sorts of features.

Depends on the song. In his Steely Dan albums and his own solo albums, it's not always explicitly ironic, but an exploration of an unsavory character. Think of it like a short story from an author.
anon
wait he played with steely dan?
>>721487

Steely Dan was less of a band, more the core two members, Fagen and Becker, who collected session musicians to do their bidding in the studio. They were notoriously perfectionist.

It was two dudes and they had session musicians. So basically, people they hired. Whoever could play their perfectionist vision would make it onto the record.
>>721525>>721524
Luca
>>721525
Yes, they were notorious for it. Especially since a lot of the equipment they were using was analog (time period), it was a bit more difficult to satisfy their tastes. I think during Gaucho Fagen joked with the engineer Roger Nichols or somebody, "can't you just get a fucking machine to play it" in reference to a drum sequence. So the dude spent a year learning 6502 assembly and programmed a drum machine called Wendl that attempted to make a less crappy sounding digital sample into something for their tracks.

Luca
>>721536
I think some of it comes from curiosity about the drum machine, it was probably some rabbit hole I went down. I think technically it was very interesting to me, especially the era transitioning between digital and analog equipment. I've done some signal processing and audio stuff for my own interest and some school projects, so the subject is a bit fascinating to me. Also just obsessively buy books on electronics and whatever else captures my interest. I think I first started learning about synths and stuff from some fucking stupid book, "Computer Music Tutorial" by Curtis Roads. Dude was a pretty famous composer, I believe. But he's great, he keeps it relatively simple, but also includes all the technical details needed for a musician.
>>721539>>721538
anon
>>721537
i could also at ramble at length
anon
So did you start on the synth/keyboard?
>>721541
Luca
>>721540
I played piano as a kid. Didn't really understand much until now though lol. I also really love electronics, so naturally, I wanted to understand how analog synthesizers and some of the signal processing works. It's been a year or two long project thus far, going from knowing literally nothing to being at least somewhat informed.
>>721542>>721543
anon
>>721541
sounds like you prefer the synth
anon
>>721541
if u played piano as a kid, i reckon the rest come naturally
anon
>>721547
i get you, dont sell urself short tho i bet its all bangers
anon
you write stuff for yourself?
Luca
I just basically do it out of technical curiosity. That's how it is in my life. I pick up something because I find it fascinating and then try to understand it well enough. Usually there are fleeting and shifting moments of interest. But it's generally a couple of things that capture my attention at once.
anon

anon
YES YES YES IT'S TIME TO ARGUE WITH LITERAL WHOS ON TWITTER ABOUT THE RWANDAN GENOCIDE
>>721553
anon
you know what i mean
anon
They are making a really dumb argument essentially
anon
The Rwandan Genocide was like uniquely evil, legitimately. They are like "oh the Rwandan Genocide Commission found that starvation is a paradigmatic element of genocide" and I am like... that's a very narrow look. Because yes, forced starvation was part of it, but you are also kinda leaving out the part where the Hutus literally clogged a river with dead bodies because they were "sending the Tutsis back to where they belong" and this literally collapsed the fishing industry in Uganda because you couldn't cast a net without pulling up a dead body
>>721558
anon
i came here to get away from /pol/ cuz the epstein files got me heated

No, General Butt Naked was a Liberian warlord, but then like after the war, he became a born again Christian, started a bunch of charities to take care of former child soldiers, and pushed for the creation of a court for war crimes in Liberia. The flip side is that General Butt Naked was legitimately one of the most evil and horrific warlords in Liberia at the time, like truly deranged and horrible shit
