Also I got into it because they were talking about how the Interahamwe were getting weapons from France, and it's like... yeah the Interahamwe were at war with the RPF for a decade leading up to the Rwandan Genocide.
sæкі
bwa
anon
idk they were just making a weird argument where they kinda downplay the elements that really made it a genocide while also like... not blaming the Hutu extremists that perpetrated it. And as weird as this sounds, like Rwandan Genocide revisionism is a huge thing in Africa. The current Tutsi government in Rwandan has essentially removed mentions of moderate Hutus being killed alongside Tutsis, meanwhile the genocidaires are still active in the DRC. It's just like... a whole thing...

he will sometimes acknowledge that there are bad things happening but only in the context of yelling about leadership.
anon
but then its like he just folds that knowledge away and falls back to all of the mass murder is good because blah blah blah
sæкі
yeh
my mom still kind of focuses on just the leadership of things and cant acknowledge that leaders here that she felt were on her side also did a ton of this themselves, but has improved on it somewhat cus of my pushing in part
anon
apparently when youre smart you dont drop willful ignorance you turn it into a nightmare tesseract of infinite justifications.

>>722071
It kinda reminds me of the whole Holodomor debate. Where, alright, so the whole argument around it is essentially, can it be defined as a genocide because the policy themselves weren't necessarily designed to do that. Essentially, Stalin starves a whole region to death, but does it qualify as this or that. And the issue is that there are malicious people that involve themselves in this debate, and ignore that the crux of the "it wasn't a genocide" side is "Stalin was so incompetent, he engaged in this brutal policy that killed millions unintentionally". So it ends up like not being possible to have nuanced discussions with alot of people about it.

anon
>>722088
That's the thing that pisses me off, there is an *academic* debate to be had, but the average person really doesn't understand. And then you have malicious actors that cling onto that debate in order to run screen for a brutal dictator, because they know that they can soften up the image, when in reality the discussion is "did he kill millions *because they were Ukrainian* or did he kill millions because he sucked"
sæкі
yeah its just that, the thing is, even with those debates being there
its never the one that's actually being had and those points are sadly taken and misused for attacks and bad faith things, which sucks and poisons the discussion

Jamaica, along with Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Dominica, St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, the spunky six of the intervention alliance, voted against the resolution. Guyana, Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada — whose delegate, with strong support, fought off a weak attempt to have his credentials rejected — and Suriname (not then a Caricom member state) voted in favour. Belize and Haiti (not then a member state of Caricom) abstained; and St Christopher and Nevis, at the time the UN’s newest member, did not participate in the vote. El Salvador and Israel, both major recipients of military assistance from their Cold War ally, the United States, voted against the resolution.

Canada and the UK abstained. Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, blindsided, humiliated and intensely embarrassed at not having been consulted or even been given adequate warning, told US President Ronald Reagan, her closest ally, that she was “deeply disturbed” by the invasion of what was a former British colony, and a member of the Commonwealth with the same head of State as Britain.

Because a specific major party in the country relies on the fact that younger people do not vote nearly as often as older people as a result of there not being a holiday.
