so they wanted help preparing for the debates so my uncle starts talking abt like "i've got all these collections of trump speeches, do u think u could make an AI that talks like trump to help her practice"

so ya i did that but i was just using chatgpt to process the documents and apparently using chatgpt for political purposes is against their TOS so basically uncle got a scary email from OpenAI and he had to promise he wasnt using their systems for anything political (he was lol) and that was the end of that project

but it ended up getting me this job

My understanding of the current state of affairs is this:
Large language models currently need vast data sets in order to be trained. That's an issue because we can only gather up so much data. So the tech companies thought theyd solve this by taking a trained model and then putting it in these automated training environments, think like playing a game against itself, having conversations with itself etc etc and it was thought that doing that would automate the training process, allowing the performance of the models to scale with compute

but what recent (like in the last few months) papers have been finding is that these automated reinforcement learning schemes don't actually appear to be teaching the models new skills- they just reinforce the ones the models already have, the ones obtained from the original training data set

which means we're basically right back to square one- dependent on large data sets that can only get so big and we are already seeing diminishing returns from

under the right guidance (prompt engineering) they can do useful things but they require a lot of hand holding and their outputs are seldom if ever error-free

absolutely, and one thing that's become increasingly obvious to me esp as my coworkers who know less abt LLMs have tried to use these systems is that it's not as simple as plug and play either, there are performance considerations that are not obvious

for example, the guys at my company thought they could just run an ollama instance in google cloud and spin up whatever model they wanted on it- the problem is that the performance of large language models is constrained by the amount of VRAM on the system, because the entire context window of the model has to fit into VRAM, so basically while they were able to set up this system, the LLM was being dumb and they didn't understand why and it was because it wasn't being given the computational resources to "think" for extended durations

i did some rough math and i think to run like a google cloud instance with 80 gigs of VRAM which is like the minimum recommended for models like deepseek R1 would cost something like $80 per hour

oh ya i mean just large models in general on the order of like 80B parameters they usually want u to have like 80-100 gigs of vram lol
