In my younger and more vulnerable years my father
gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over
in my mind ever since.
>>739338
anon
“Whenever you feel like criticising any one,” he
told me, ‘‘just remember that all the people in this
world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”
>>739340
anon
He didn’t say any more, but we’ve always been
unusually communicative in a reserved way, and I
understood that he meant a great deal more than
that. In consequence, I’m inclined to reserve all
judgments, a habit that has opened up many curi-
ous natures to me and also made me the victim of
not a few veteran bores. The abnormal mind is
quick to detect and attach itself to this quality
when it appears in a normal person, and so it came
about that in college I was unjustly accused of
being a politician, because I was privy to the secret
griefs of wild, unknown men.
>>739344
anon
ost of the confidences
were unsought—frequently I have feigned sleep,
preoccupation, or a hostile levity when I realized by
some unmistakable sign that an intimate revelation
was quivering on the horizon; for the intimate
revelations of young men, or at least the terms in
>>739346
anon
which they express them, are usually plagiaristic
and marred by obvious suppressions. Reserving
judgments is a matter of infinite hope. I am still a
little afraid of missing something if I forget that, as
my father snobbishly suggested, and I snobbishly
repeat, a sense of the fundamental decencies is par-
celled out unequally at birth.
>>739348
straw bury
anon
And, after boasting this way of my tolerance, I
come to the admission that it has a limit. Conduct
may be founded on the hard rock or the wet marshes,
but after a certain point I don’t care what it’s
founded on. When I came back from the East last
autumn I felt that I wanted the world to be in
uniform and at a sort of moral attention forever;
I wanted no more riotous excursions with privileged
glimpses into the human heart. Only Gatsby, the
man who gives his name to this book, was exempt
from my reaction—Gatsby, who represented every-
thing for which I have an unaffected scorn.
>>739351
anon
If per-
sonality is an unbroken series of successful gestures,
then there was something gorgeous about him, some
heightened sensitivity to the promises of life, as if
he were related to one of those intricate machines
that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away.
This responsiveness had nothing to do with that
flabby impressionability which is dignified under the
name of the ‘creative temperament”—it was an
extraordinary gift for hope, a romantic readiness
such as I have never found in any other person and
>>739354
anon
which it is not likely I shall ever find again. No—
Gatsby turned out all right at the end; it is what
preyed on Gatsby, what foul dust floated in the
wake of his dreams that temporarily closed out my
interest in the abortive sorrows and short-winded
elations of men.

what is northernlions deal anyway he seems beloved by everyone and i like how quick on his feet he is without being an asshole
>>739477

>>739470
right now im trying to write a Protagonist who is directly meant to remind the Media Consumer of ways they've been aloof or malaised and treated their loved ones like shit
anon
>>739470
It's uh the whole thing where people want the media that "makes the most sense" as opposed to like something creative or moving. The whole cinemasins-ing of everything.
fentmom
cinema sins had like the most god awful annoying voice and manner of speaking ive ever heard
anon
And gaming nerds are the absolute worst about cinemasins-ing every single last thing, where they judge a plot or story based purely on how airtight it is to the point at which anything unique or special or unusual is considered flawed
fentmom
a lot of Gamer Guys have that kind of Aspergers where they're unable to articulate why they like something for what it looks like or represents or whatever, so they just go off on shit like "this 3d model of a gun is more complex thus better than the less complex model" which is like an argument that reduces it all to easily quantifiable crap

anon
>>739476
Everybody wants to quantify everything, we are rapidly entering a world where everything is analyzed quantitatively. idk how to put it exactly, I've been writing like a dumb book in my spare time and one of the central sticking points is that like everything is taken to extremes I don't know how to explain it
>>739480
fentmom
>>739479
people are so afraid to express things that are important to them whether its like tastes or politics or beliefs or shit like that and everything has to be so numbers fuckstein now. its like they're scared of having to defend what they like and believe in. i kind of think i get what you're saying. this is something to think about further
>>739481
anon
>>739480
It's not just that, like er... the sort of body types that people prefer these days, like people crave the extreme, the things that can be directly quantified and compared as opposed to just something that fits all together and evokes an ideal or whatever
>>739484

fentmom
like everything has to be the most extreme of like these pre approved categories
>>739491
anon
>>739485
And people aren't really afraid of saying they want the fake and surgically modified to get someone with those looks either
anon
>>739487
And I feel like you've started seeing this all across society, with fashion, what's more expensive was what was attractive, the best musician, well how do you compare? How many albums they sold, and when rappers put together music, that's exactly what they talk about, their wealth when put against others, their ability to sell more. idk there's a whole thing that I can't really explain fully in words, I can only vaguely describe what I am thinking
>>739492
fentmom
>>739491
it seems evocative of our larger neurosis infused need to pick the safe and approved option in everything
>>739494
anon
>>739492
I think there is a confluence of many different things that has caused alot of this
anon
Like with alot of the quantity stuff too, it's just become entirely detached from reality. Like I saw an article about how Elon Musk is at something like 410 billion dollars and is on track to be a trillionaire by this date or whatever, and it's like these are completely meaningless numbers at a certain point. Sure that's a valuation of a set of objective metrics or whatever, but it's not really, there's no 410 billion dollar thing to buy or sell, there's no world where someone works through that money in a lifetime, nor does Elon even have that money in liquid cash. It's just entirely meaningless, the thing that would carry meaning is what he purchases, what he's doing with that money, but everybody talks about the number, not the I guess qualitative analysis of his spending
Luca
Do you mean numbers that are completely inconceivable to the human mind or...?
>>739499
fentmom
like these share prices are BS in the sense that
fentmom
he cant just take that money all out and do anything with it
anon
>>739496
No I don't mean that, I just mean that there is a massive obsession with quantitative analysis and comparisons of these values in modern society
>>739502
fentmom
what drives this wealth up its just all like
fentmom
im gonna be honest my head hurts too much rn to even begin
Luca
>>739499
I got that much, but why does it matter how people choose to conceive of the world? I dunno, it seems sort of pointless to me be afraid of it? Are you merely criticizing the fact that it's basically just meaningless?
>>739506>>739507
sæкі

sæкі
apparently the guy who owns our smoke shop bought me/my mom starbucks
anon
>>739502
I feel like a big part of art is understanding how people perceive the world and I think there is value in sort of understanding how people have begun to perceive things. I am not necessarily purely critical of this quantitative analysis focus, actually at a certain point I'd say that like... it is so everpresent nobody can actually escape it at this point. Even those VGH REVOLT AGAINST LE MODERN WORLD types, the "dark enlightenment" people that think that the scientific revolution was a mistake and we should all read about Evola's mystical woowoo bullshit, even they analyze so much shit with quantities and comparisons
>>739509
fentmom
>>739502
i think we dont want to live in a world where like ... love and appreciation of others has lost to like people peacocking to their friends that they achievied the ultimate 10/10 100% Thick Goth Girlfriend or some other inhumanly quantifiable perfected category of person ... at least thats what we were talking about earlier
>>739508
Luca
>>739507
Well, that's a separate problem, imo lmao. I try not to quantify the value of human... things(?)
Luca
>>739506
Fair yeah, a lot of conspiracy theorists love to do that shit. I think my issue is that people like numbers, but don't really care to understand the underlying concepts so that they can actually try to understand what numbers mean lol. I also try really hard to get an understanding of everything that is both intuitive and adherent to the actual principles and... gah

anon
>>739509
I guess I don't even fully mean that, though this is part of it, numbers being detached from any intuitive understanding. I just think people have a huge appetite for comparisons. I mentioned it earlier, but the whole shift in body preferences towards "the big ass, big breasts" deal. Where like, maybe I am look with rose tinted glasses, but in ye olden days it was more important for someone to have this sort of complete form that had a certain ideal to it, now alot of it is just people want the bigger one because the bigger is better and it is slowly becoming just straight up grotesque
>>739520

anon
>>739522
That's kind of exactly what I mean, except I think it's just a completely all encompassing deal. It's not just with bodies, or fashion, or wealth, this kind of thinking has just become completely ingrained, which is also why you get gamer nerds that argue about the number of polygons on a shotgun or film nerds talking about the number of plot holes per minute or whatever the fuck. Everything is quantified, cinemasins-ified, etc.

anon
The idea that something can just sort of standalone and evoke an idea feels like it has fallen to the wayside, now everything has to be put in this competition with a whole system of things that only matter in relation to each other and then analyzed in terms of a set of quantifiable metrics
fentmom
going back to videogames im a little disheartened whenever i look at steam and like the latest offering is

fentmom
the first is like
fentmom
i dont know how to put this. i feel like people come home from shitty jobs and they just want something to sink massive amounts of hours into without thinking or feeling much. it feels like the spending your days smoking weed content with being bored, unterstimulated, un-actualised of Media Consumption
>>739542
anon
>>739541
I suppose but I feel like that has been a general trend for a long time, it was even somewhat enforced by a sort of "code" we had in Hollywood throughout the 50's

And on a similar token that sort of "boredom and desire for something to just keep you entertained" is what underpinned the culture of the Vienna System and such
