if you've heard of the gothic series this features heavily in it. the gothic games are fun and very much unlike other rpg games. you get the feeling you are beholden to Society and must make some attempt at integrating into it

something interesting about gothic 2 is that to progress into Higher Society and be Taken Seriously (you're supposed to be warning the authorities of a dragon attack), you basically have to become a Cop, a Mafia Goon, or join the religious order that demands tithes and money from people

yea and when the dragon attack happens in skyrim, everyone immediately takes your warning seriously and you're invited into the halls of the jarl to tell them about it. its not a bad approach, but its different and i think shows the games philosophy off

yeah i read in morrowind (i havent played it) you have to join a noble house which you're never granted full control over unlike the mages guild in later games and you have to be a peon

you can sort of call the player character in skyrim like this sorta clint eastwood type cowboy who never really lives in the cities but sort of just appears and everyone defers to them with their problems. thinking about it, oblivion was a lot like this too. i tried to play oblivion lately to Role Play as this sort of sneaky but mostly nonviolent mage woman and kind of abandoned it because all of the quests revolved around killing tons of people

i just wanted to play as a student of the magical arts who just happens to break into peoples houses in order to fund her studies

though i do appreciate the fact a lot of Adult Gamers just come home from working at a warehouse and want to be the viking equivalent of The Man With No Name

something sad i found out about my enjoyment of RPG games is that i cant really fuck with an isometric CRPG

i think about this, but on the other hand you have all these super grindy games popular in japan where people basically work more than they live. i think its gotta be a multitude of factors. maybe a lot of it really is top-down speculation from EA type publishers, telling their developers to simplify everything

well i wasnt being general ... TA has a good point tho a lot of people do the same simplistic thing over and over again in the kind of games americans play. i think the point that i was making was that japanese games are time consuming and complex often and they barely have any leisure time

although trying to understand why they're like that is further hampered by the fact japan has a ton of NEETs with all the time in the world to play videogames so perhaps they're the market

but then im reminded of the fact that the yakuza series is made for like 40 year old japanese guys who all have jobs

you seem to be adding a lot of elements that would make for like a fascinating immersive sim sort of type game

living in this forlorn light-fantasy land where you're expected to carry on a normal life despite the world becoming something else at dark

nobody acknowledges it, you're hushed if you try to bring it up at the local tavern

the sci fi stuff reminds me a lot of old mods for games like mount and blade and goldsrc engine games that have UFOs and stuff appear and its oddly spooky and disconcerting

yeah a lot of half life 1 mods would have you just be in a normal escaping black mesa scenario and then like you're abducted by UFOs

i think that was more of a cultural trope in the late 90s/early 2000s

think south park with cartman getting abducted

what inspired you to make a mod like this, this isnt me meaning to be rude but its like a fascinating scenario youve created

yeah i felt the deus ex influence

i started writing a backstory/some script for like a horror game a while ago and as its progressed i think its started to reflect my own lifelong fixations with power, identity, friendships, institutions, and the way ive viewed them or seen others experience them

really liked system shock 2

insane audio design and music in particular

the way the game knows to hype you up and get you ready for close quarters melee combat with zombies and then take a pause and get you scared about the robot nurse coming around the corner

love it when audio and gameplay work like that in tandem

definitely feels like a game that was masterfully directed in order to induce feelings in the player

tried to get my dad to download it but he just grunted and went back to fallout 4. its a shame, he used to be so curious about things

he used to show me games like quake team arena and carmageddon as a kid, and i saw him struggle with the first baldurs gate game when i was young too

he sorta just sits on his linux computer and does a variety of things to stave off boredom until he goes to bed, never really diving deep into any of it

example: i have seen him on and off try to learn the language of esperanto for over 20 years

hes only in his mid 50s but like he used speed pretty much every week inbetween his teens and early 30s

my grandmother is still as sharp as i always remember, i can visit her and we'll have a conversation/debate about pretty much anything and im astonished by how smart she will is. she does a lot of crossword puzzles (the hard ones, in the broadsheets) and reads a lot of both fiction and non fiction
