there is genes which are highly correlated with autism as in if you have this form of this gene, you are 80% likely to have ASD, or something like that

im making that number up but anyways they know those genes are very related to autism

and with studying the genome of different species you can figure out when genes developed. Ie. if a tortoise and a crocodile has the same gene, you know for a fact that that gene has existed at least as long as the time when those two species diverged from a common ancestor

and the highly autism correlated genes are some of the very oldest known genes, they existed since like cambrian period

so there is probably autistic anomalocarids lmfao

They are like some of the most fundemental genes relating to neuron development in early notochords n stuff

So it is likely that things like autism present in basically every stem tetrapod at least and probably also in crustaceans

that is also how we figured out fungus are not plants and archaea are not bacteria

Also it is how we are pretty sure that chloroplasts were once seperate organisms closely related to cyanobacter
