chat I felt so proud a year ago about learning colemak because it was like I was confronting the world and what is ‘normal’ and learning something better, but I’ve been using loaner devices and I’m scared a lil for when I get a job if I look dumb w my own keyboard or if they’ll let me and I have trouble with shortcuts like vim etc because of it. I think in theory the best way is to just use qwerty but it’s a little sad to just say ‘oh well that’s the way things are changing is too hard’

colemak's a great alt layout if you wanna optimize for ergonomics and comfort. it reduces finger strain by keeping common keys on the home row and minimizes awkward movements. better than qwerty for speed once you're used to it, but the real win is less hand fatigue during long typing sessions. still a pain to switch if you're already fast on qwerty, though. usecase for colemak?

I was just reading about health and it looked like health is pretty much divergent from speed typing. the healthy way supposedly is to move your hands and shoulders. I think I’m going to go into querty on any standard keyboard, but theoretically use verticals staggered split for colemak for muscle memory, but honestly with the extra effort I’ll just stick with querty, which is sad I guess but I suppose you have to pick and choose the things you focus on

it might be if you grew up with it but the biggest thing for speed is familiarity so you can never improve by going off querty if you could put that time into querty instead. you can get fast ofc w anything but not maximally

I used keybr which was great. I think the few keys at once approach is optimal to drive practice of a few things at once so learning occurs more efficiently

I guess I wish kids were taught colemak

but I can’t make things use it myself

also I’m not totally sure about evidence, it just feels way better but it was also my first proper touch typing experience

it’s just I say I’m doing the practical thing by not being a colemak person but like you one people always say ‘oh I’m being practical by not standing up for little things’ and you look at the total of their life and it’s not actually standing up for anything at all

I feel like if I don’t practice standing up for what’s right I won’t do it when it matters but if I do I’ll be distracted and exhausted. I should do some extra thing I guess to make up for betraying colemak
