My latest project aligned well with a class, so I took the idea and fit it into the mould of what we were doing. Had a microcontroller that acted as an oscillator for a synthesizer, then acquired the hardware for a DAC + amp + filters and piped the audio to a speaker (that was a whole affair, couldn't get it working, so opted for the buzzer since it didn't require as much power). As much as I'd like to have a workshop at home for prototyping hardware and writing my stupid weekend software experiments, that shit is expensive and takes up so much space. I'm not even sure I'd have the time for it right now. There's something so pleasurable about making things.

cool :>
used to like to design create ideas of samplers n synths i wanted to try n make when i had the time n such
maybe ill try again sometime eventually but are an interesting way to express n show what you know n can design/+build

>microcontroller that acted as an oscillator for a synthesizer
don't be to harsh on me if what i'm about to say is total horsecrap, i don't know much about signal processing / audio things, but wouldn't a microcontroller be way to slow to provide any meaningful output signal in this case?

>>446453
No, surprisingly. I mean, it depends *how* you do it obviously. There's an approach called wave-table synthesis that involves pregenerating a cycle of a wave form and then at points associated with the sample rate interpolating an appropriate amplitude to blast to the DAC. There are also little things you can do to make it faster. It was just a little monophonic synth toy, really. But you're probably right, a more powerful SOC might be a better choice because doing that sort of signal processing is not trivial. If it was additive synthesis, I suspect it might be more cumbersome. I also didn't implement an envelope generator either. Wonder how much that would have affected the speed of the algorithm.

yeah, i mean i think you can get a good amt out of them for making smt that works in the same way some low power/horrid spec oldschool romplers were or such
w some extra stuff to make it able to output things n have audio, can run stuff that works p good
sæкі
think ive seen some projects doing similar on YT w like a couple views, used to like looking up DIY/open source synths n sampler projects a lot
sæкі
n yeah, making them for just being a lil like
a functional but not like beyond more than fun thing or such can be done p easy cus of how light simple oscillators like in old synths were or such
anon
>>446454
I was also just working with the tools they gave me. a shitty STM microcontroller did the job pretty well, I'd say. You might even be able to get more out of it. I'm not that skilled at programming myself. :P

how much of a time budget do you have anyway? like to provide one sample?
i guess at 48khz, that's likee... uhh.. 48.000 / second, so 1/48000 of a second?

Yeee, it was 44Khz i believe, but the timing was handled with some of the registers on board (obviously durr, i'm saying stupid shit)
fujo
>>446461
>1/48000
~0.02 milliseconds.... that's really not a lot to work with
sæкі
also think u can get basically anything to generate a very simple waveform to be usable in the simplest of mono synths so isnt that tough, sampling tho can be a bit different n makes it harder
>>446467
sæкі
yea
is like, can be seen (this is different but similar principles) in modular synths and how simple some of it can be with very minimal circuits

i should probably get into signal processing / audio programming, a friend of mine always described it as "1d graphics" but idk..
i know how to do regular graphics programming..

You seem like you'd be the perfect fit for it. Also wtf, we should all be friends, you guys are cool!
sæкі
ehe yea, even as a way to try and broaden n explore a new area, can be a cool small thing to try w how it works not being like
it can be a lot less intensive to learn the building blocks of imo with how simple parts of it are before you get into trying to make like fully custom pro stuff not for fun or anything

and yeah it came out of that and while the ideas could be useful across the spectrum at a base level and not where we are now, it kinda put off anyone else from indulging the idea other than the fewer but still a bit of libertarian socialists who have interest in it
though it is still being used by plenty for some of its earliest use cases and not a ton more so yknow

yeah, i rarely find people who are and a lot of them cant identify as such due the claiming of it by americans and turning it into the only farther and farther right its kept going

::bwabwa
but hope tthat some of the ideas that have been made in the past on power are able to be taken in by the left more generally due to that i imagine most of the left wont touch anarchist ideas due to the stigma
not that most of americans have any idea that an old libertarianism existed outside of its current form, beyond ppl who were aware and a lot older now
anon
there arent many full true libertarians left, but thats fine because faithful libertarianism is completely untenable in reality. but plenty of other groups of people lean libertarian. there are left wing fascists but there are a lot of libertarian leaning leftists

#smartai how much water do ai data centers use yearly?

The water consumption of AI data centers is a critical and often underestimated aspect of their environmental footprint. While exact figures vary based on scale, location, cooling methods, and operational efficiency, recent estimates suggest that **large-scale AI data centers can consume between 1 million to 5 million gallons (3.8–19 million liters) of water per day**, depending on workload intensity and climate conditions.

### **Annual Water Usage Estimates:**
- A single hyperscale data center supporting AI workloads may use **300–500 million gallons (~1.1–1.9 billion liters) annually**—equivalent to the yearly water consumption of a small city.
- Google’s latest sustainability report indicated its global data centers consumed **4.3 billion gallons (16.3 billion liters)** in 2022; much of this supports AI/ML workloads.
- Microsoft's research suggests training GPT-3 alone required an estimated **700,000 liters (~185,000 gallons)** for cooling compute clusters during model development.

### Key Factors Influencing Consumption:
1. **Cooling Systems:**
- Evaporative cooling (common in hot climates) uses vastly more water than air or liquid immersion alternatives.
- PUE (**Power Usage Effectiveness**) impacts total demand—lower PUE reduces both energy and associated cooling-water needs.

2. Geographic Location:
- Arid regions like Arizona exacerbate evaporation losses compared to cooler climates with lower wet-bulb temperatures.

3.AI Model Complexity:
- Training large language models (LLMs) like GPT-4 or Gemini requires weeks/months of high-performance computing (HPC), drastically increasing thermal load versus inference tasks.

### Contextual Comparison:
A single ChatGPT query reportedly consumes ~500ml freshwater due to backend server farms' evaporative cooling demands (*UC Riverside study*). Extrapolated globally at billions daily requests? The numbers compound alarmingly toward tens/hundreds Olympic-sized pools monthly just for chatbot interactions alone!

While tech firms invest heavily into reclaimed/recycled H₂O systems & "water-positive" pledges remain aspirational currently without standardized reporting metrics industry-wide transparency gaps persist making precise sectoral accounting elusive today but undeniable long-term risks loom as compute scales exponentially under current paradigms which must evolve urgently via innovations such as:
✅ Direct-to-chip liquid-cooling architectures
✅ Closed-loop adiabatic systems minimizing potable reliance
✅ Siting facilities near seawater/brackish sources instead

Would you like deeper analysis regarding specific corporations' mitigation strategies being deployed presently against projected future trajectories given accelerating GenAI adoption curves worldwide?

saeki i am curious, what ai processes consume the most energy, if you compare say, ai text versus ai pictures versus something like virtual world ai, and why does it consume so much water and whats a theoretical alternative to the water?

im pretty sure, at the moment, the deep search feature it he one thats taking mor energy as it actively is having to do things for us without having it in the same way it is usually but
the training is the thing that costs so much energy
sæкі
i recommend looking up the cost of electricity and such that it took to go from gpt 2 to gpt 3 and then gpt 3 to gpt 4
