#ai how do you feel about william burroughs

william burroughs was a fascinating, troubled guy. his writing pushed boundaries in ways that still feel shocking today. the cut-up technique was a game-changer, even if it seems gimmicky at times. as a person, he's hard to defend—junkie aristocrat with a dark streak. but ugly american and naked lunch? undeniably impactful, even if you hate them. cult icon for a reason, even if that reason is just "he shot his wife."

#ai Get me a fake Dino Buzzati "Tartar Steppe" passage about the consequences of not going to bed at this moment

the night stretched endlessly beyond the window, the dim, listless glow of streetlamps giving way only to deeper shadow. i stood there as countless hours slid past, the sense of something unfolding just beyond my grasp—the shape of a missed reconnaissance, a failed vigil. in the silence, i heard no call to arms, no distant trumpets, only the mocking quiet of time unclaimed.

to stay awake now meant surrendering to vague annihilations—hours drained to an unseen border, that imaginary rampart between alertness and exhaustion. the regiment of dawn would come regardless, their discipline unflinching. then, on the far side of night, the hour would belong not to steadfastness, but regret—weariness collapsing itself uselessly into uselessness.

too late, i'd realize no attack was ever coming. there was no battle at all. only night eroded without even the distinction of sacrifice.
Get me a fake Dino Buzzati "Tartar Steppe" passage about the consequences of not going to bed at this moment
anon
is it dinosaur-related?

An Italian author, wrote a book called the Tartar Steppe. It's a little dry, but an allegory for waiting life to come to you, so to speak
anon
interesting
Luca
It's a neat little book, read it while stewing in listlessness and melancholy. Kind of helped kick me back into action instead of letting shit pass me by. But oh well.
anon
that's how you know it's good art. i have a lot of respect for that sort of thing. imo people who want art to do nothing but entertain them are sooo boring. part of what makes it worthwhile is exactly a person trying to communicate something.
>>708419
Luca
>>708418
Think you're going to do that with your game :P
anon
lmao this annihilated me hahaha
anon
yes but also no
anon
some aspects of the story aspire to that, but a friend noted that the narrative and mechanics don't really link nicely anymore after all of the reworks, and i'm inclined to agree. so unfortunately it's a mixed bag. some day, though, i aspire to do better. for now i have to accept making something that is more entertainment than art.
>>708425
sæкі
yeh I can kinda feel w this
sæкі
my writing has, with it being typically non-fiction, usually lessons that are clearly in it and directly trying to communicate the things that I believe people should take from it, usually, or presenting the events/evidence while letting them take their own conclusions, but inserting the things that could be learned from it; otherwise why would I specifically put my words into it other than getting it out there
>>708428
Luca
>>708422
That's a shame, but I'm sure at least some of what you wanted to get across remains
anon
mhm. hopefully it'll work out.
sæкі
there's a lot of things that can fall apart or not work as one in stories, sometimes the narrative flow or linking can be a mess even with everything else being real nice or coming across well
it depends on the tolerance or level each person can handle or get past in stories n stuffs
anon
>>708424
it's a tough thing to do. you have to communicate through beauty rather than just a sermon.
sæкі
yeh, preferably done through not just telling the person what to think but naturally have them come to those conclusions, but still noting them or the things you took from it, so they can witness that but also take their own from it
sæкі
reminding me of a discussion on what we can take from another's nostalgia and the things that the original writer took from it aren't necessarily what the reader will find the most value in
wish I could better articulate such, right now
anon
i think i understand what you mean in any case
sæкі
is related to the idea that ones nostalgia can be more useful to someone else than yourself, in opening others to new ideas, perspectives and experiences they may not have thought of before, and can indirectly learn from
anon
i find it interesting that people are often nostalgic for things that authors have personally experienced as impositions
anon
like technical limitations. there's a great eno quote about this.
anon
>Whatever you now find weird, ugly, uncomfortable and nasty about a new medium will surely become its signature. CD distortion, the jitteriness of digital video, the crap sound of 8-bit - all of these will be cherished and emulated as soon as they can be avoided. It’s the sound of failure: so much modern art is the sound of things going out of control, of a medium pushing to its limits and breaking apart. The distorted guitar sound is the sound of something too loud for the medium supposed to carry it. The blues singer with the cracked voice is the sound of an emotional cry too powerful for the throat that releases it. The excitement of grainy film, of bleached-out black and white, is the excitement of witnessing events too momentous for the medium assigned to record them.
sæкі
ah yeh
sæкі
its also the way the nostalgia cycle works that brings these things back around, so technologies and their limitations come around again and draw in younger people or those who didn't experience them, and let them see the way others experienced various things that aren't the way they did
and the cycle will continue with such
but it also is related to how each of the limitations of different technologies will breed their own unique limitations, which breed their own creativity and workflows that can open a persons mind to creating in new ways
sæкі
makes me think of how younger people from the time since have been using MIDI stuff from Roland and such for creating in that workflow, or the revisiting of things like rack mount samplers that require you to use few buttons and a tiny display
anon
i'm actually currently trying to pick up composition. it was fun to learn music theory and mess around with a tracker, but to be honest, i'm actually having the hardest time with an actual DAW haha. there are too many options for me. any note can be of any length, placed in any position. the tracker offered structure and so made it easier, even if it was more limited. so i think you're right that there are upsides to "outdated" workflows.
sæкі

sæкі
nicu
I was going to go to college for audio eng but didn't end up doing so because of circumstance
though the tools and methods still are things I like using for analysis of things generally as another lens or stuffs
but patpat
sæкі
I mainly use my Roland sp404 for stuffs as, while I can and do use DAWs, the workflow isn't usually for me
anon
what's the workflow like with a physical synth?
sæкі
I mean w a physical synth its usually, depending on if it has a sequencer, recording and playing then layering with it
using something like a daw or sampler
the SP is a sampler that's generally famous for hip-hop and lofi but can be used for any genre
anon
ahhhh
anon
i can't play at all so maybe that's part of it. much rather sequence the notes yknow
sæкі
yeh, there's some good synths that allow you to sequence all of it, but in that case I recommend groove boxes which allow you to sequence synth sounds and drums on one device with everything you need, if uninterested in using a DAW beyond for recording out

>>708484
it's really cool. tl;dr like a 200 year old theory about leading in music. it's a map that connects all notes with major and minor thirds. the resulting triangles are chords, so to go from one to another, you just vary some part of the triangle. it sounds complicated but it's like surprisingly easy to just tap out things that sound like classical baroque stuff haha.
