this explains it they were upset about the breton woods in general and once they saw the US was spending so much on vietnam they struck (or panicked if you want to be charitable)
anon
Oh the French didn't like us for a number of reasons, we didn't support their bid for Algeria, we really weren't big fans of their attempt to hold Vietnam either (contrary to popular belief, the US had not been big fans of the colonial states that Britain and France had formed), we also told the French Brits and Israelis to fuck off during the Suez Crisis, I'm sure we also told them to fuck off quite a few times in the Middle East in general, and also the French are just incredibly prideful and didn't like that we essentially dictated all the military strategy with very little input from them

De Gaulle opined that American imperialism supported its capital export. In January 1963, he told his spokesperson:

Western Europe has become an American protectorate without even realizing it. We must now rid ourselves of their domination. But the difficulty here is that the colonized don't really want to emancipate themselves. Since the end of the war, the Americans have subjugated us painlessly and without much resistance.

I always like that little detail, we subjugated them painlessly by selling them loads of shit and bankrolling their defense, De Gaulle really just had a melty because we told him to stop killing the nice african people (while we killed the ones we had in the US, but that's neither here nor there)

politics is like when people yell at each other on tv and say stuff that dont make no sense. sumtimes they talk about taxes or wars or sumthin but i dunno what they mean. i think its all just a big game where rich ppl tell us what to do and we just nod our heads like "yes sir" but really we got no clue. sum ppl say vote but then the other guy wins anyway so whats the point? also theres like left and right but i get confused cuz left is right and right is wrong or sumthin? idk man its all too much for my tiny brain. maybe if we just gave everyone free tacos it would fix everything lol

I think that they are substantially better than the opposing party to the extent at which I simply cannot imagine criticizing them without heavy tempering, but what we have right now is a situation where literally everyone can get social capital from shitting on the Democrats, even Democrat politicians

And how exactly? Through what methods and at what point would they be making these moves? And regardless, the past is the past, what we have right now is total right wing media domination, a right wing trifecta, and a destruction of all norms and institutions. With the Dems serving as, whether we like it or not, the unarguably best option to oppose it

My honest reaction would be "cool", yeah I am sure the Dems could have gone nuclear here, or opposed a media acquisition there, but this assumes perfect action at every opportunity. I don't think the Dems are perfect, but as I said before, they are leagues better, and I want you to consider this. We are on a board called liberal politics, this place should be goddamn megalib central, but defending the Democrats here is like pulling goddamn teeth, do you think a party that gets bashed this hard by their core base is nearly as strong as you purport it to be?
0.2676% laptopbooger!boymodewng
but if your list includes things like:
1. do something that's fundamentally undemocratic

For one, when you look into this, please recall that all of this is entirely unprecedented, so if you see a case where the Dems could have gone with a nuclear option, deeply consider whether a nuclear option would have been feasible at the time as opposed to whether it seems good in hindsight. Two, a country's institutions are only as strong as its people, and what has been lost can be taken back. I am of the belief that it's worth trying to fix things instead of whatever the "fuck it" attitude is.

like the dems literally tried to impeach trump for the january 6th thing but surprise surprise they couldn't do it becaues the repulicans blocked that. To start, achieving a House and Senate majority in 2027, which is feasible, the Republican efforts are not moving fast enough to stop midterms from occurring. A massive influx of new blood into Congress whose sole purpose is to impede the Presidency will dramatically hinder Trump and put the Republicans into a lame duck position, especially if people rally behind the Dems to engage in obstruction.

We have a system where the people have the means to vote, and although this country is flawed, I believe that it is built on the fundamental ideal that all people should have the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. I think that guys like Martin Luther King were right when they say that the American revolution wrote a check that is meant to be cashed by all people, so I don't think this is something to give up on.

I disagree, when the US first form, very few people had the rights promised to them by the Declaration of Independence, it was only through a long hard road that we eventually began expanding these rights, but at the core of this road was the understanding that the US itself was fundamentally built on this promise. We live in one of the most prosperous periods of history, the US has proven adaptable in the face of crisis, you look at our performance during Covid for example, where in spite of Trump's bullshittery, we still absolutely smashed our targets for vaccinations. We have a system that clearly still has some vigor and capacity, along with people that want to make it better.

>Trump was factually correct in reminding Biden that cages were part of an embarrassing Obama administration get-tough policy in 2014 that also dehumanized migrants as part of a mass detention policy, but it is only under Trump that the United States systematically separated children from their families with no plans for reunification. Trump was also correct to suggest that the Obama administration laid the foundation for Trump to effectively implement tougher immigration policies.

>Yet unlike anything Trump has ever done, Biden admitted to a national television audience that what happened under President Barack Obama was a mistake — and it was actually the first thing he said when asked about the Obama's administration's culpability for the current situation. “Because we made a mistake," he told the moderator Kristen Welker.
