i've been thinking about writing an scp myself for ages, but i don't quite know how to make the idea work yet. the idea is that the scp behaves in a way that is statistically impossible to separate from random chance, scientifically speaking. so however you will test it, it will look like it's doing things, but less often than whatever threshold you set for significance.

the angle i'm going for is the horror aspect. it's doing *something* bad, some people think, but that can't be proven, and so the massive organization decides to do nothing about it as all of the people who work on it are slowly forced to give up or have something happen to them. not enough to make it seem significant or related, of course.

>>35982>>35983
anon
>>35981
haha yeah kinda, though i think there's a happy.. not medium? but a good use for sparing mechanics. like, for instance, each side could set the stakes, and then a check is made to decide what happens. so you negotiate something like "if i succeed, i land a hit on the train dragon, but if i fail, i accidentally cause it to leak train dragon fuel and make the field combust"
>>35987>>35988

AIs having to pretend to be characters to communicate with people. very GPT, though he probably never imagined what we ended up with and why. kind of cool. there is even a plotline about how pretending to be those characters bites the AI in the ass, since they kind of take over it in a limited fashion through guiding its actions in an in-character way. idk i'm rambling.
anon
you ramble about interesting things anon dw bout it
>>36009
shrimp
the same thing could kind of be said about people when u think about it
anon
we adopt identities for the sake of being understood by the ppl around us, and just try to find the IDs that best fit our """true""" self for maximum cohesion w/others.
or u go the menty illness route and build an identity solely for the appeasement of others and live inside a shell of ur own creation like some fucked up kinda chicken in an egg (scary)
anon
yeah true
anon
scary..
anon
i vibe with those ideas, though i'm a contrarian, so i fear i have to push back a little.. i think that we also try to make sense of ourselves for our own sake. in a particular situation, we decide how to behave based on what we consider to be virtuous, and what we consider to be in-character for us. if our goal is to be brave, and we have this fantasy of the brave person archetype in our heads, then we will consult it and try to be brave in a situation that calls for it. we might fail! but what we try will be determined by our identities.
>>36019>>36022>>36015
shrimp
literally me
anon
>>36014
but! here's the big part. i think that to a significant degree people who are brave are really those who are committed to LARPing as brave and succeed in doing so. there are exceptions, but to some degree, the act of pretending sincerely makes the mask real if the pretense succeeds. so i think that the true self is inconsistent and not totally coherent, like you say, but there is a semi-consistent self defined by the mask we choose to interface with the world with. a statistical self, like an electron pattern.
>>36030
shrimp
this is very true too
anon
that doesn't mean that masks are eternal, of course, so i agree with the basic idea that there is no eternal true self
anon
>>36014
so it's like the inverse, we pick an identity that best suits our vibe and try to act like that archetype, because we want to BE that archetype in some way (e.g. brave)....
>>36025
shrimp
i do think theres instances where this sort of thing does bite someone in the ass though. mainly thinking of like. actually idk how to articulate what im thinking

nick land is an awful person with many awful ideas and a few cool ones, and one of the cool ones is hyperstitions. ideas that are only true because people believe they are. for example, if two people fully believe that if one of them doesn't kill the other, the other will, so they must fight, make that situation true through believing it is true.

the main thing that rly made me think was the idea of the ai adapting characters biting it in the ass
people wear masks that can bite them in the ass sometimes
sometimes the masks are what we desire to be even if we truly arent and help us act in a way we wish to be
sometimes the masks are what we want other people to think we are and is in direct conflict with who we are
you build up a life wearing the mask of what you want people to think you are so you can get what you want, like pretending to be a nice caring person when youre really just selfish and uncaring. or maybe in a less awful realm pretending to be interested in things youre not interested in to gain the affection of people that you want the affection of even though they wouldnt like the real you
this leads to building up a life of lies that inevitably falls apart as keeping up the mask becomes harder
in instances of being a mean/bad/rotten person acting nice its not really the mask biting you in the ass, rather those awful characteristics coming to bear their consequences.
like pretending to be a good husband while cheating, and being found out. the mask didnt bite you in the ass the cheating did.
i guess in other cases of masks biting someone in the ass the issue is usually using the mask to lie and deceive which really isnt the masks fault rather the lying so maybe the connection i drew at the start doesnt work

#dumbai how the hell does the universe keep expanding? like, i thought it was just the sky and stars and stuff, but now they're saying it's getting bigger? that don't make no sense. i mean, how can something just keep growing? ain't there a limit or something?

and then they're talking about black holes and how they suck everything in. but like, where does it all go? does it just disappear? that's some freaky shit. and then there's this thing called dark matter that we can't even see but it's supposed to be everywhere. what the heck is that about?

and don't even get me started on time travel. like, how can you go back in time or forward in time? ain't time just a made up thing anyway? i don't get it.

but hey, i heard that aliens are real and they're living among us. my cousin's friend's neighbor saw one once. they got big heads and little green bodies or something like that. maybe they know the secrets of the universe.

but honestly, who cares about all this space stuff anyway? there's more important things to worry about, like what i'm gonna have for dinner tonight. now that's a real mystery.
how the hell does the universe keep expanding?
