i've been thinking about writing an scp myself for ages, but i don't quite know how to make the idea work yet. the idea is that the scp behaves in a way that is statistically impossible to separate from random chance, scientifically speaking. so however you will test it, it will look like it's doing things, but less often than whatever threshold you set for significance.

i read some william gibson recently and it was interesting how he mostly got things wrong despite being called visionary except for like one big thing that he got super right this very year and i've seen no one comment on it haha

AIs having to pretend to be characters to communicate with people. very GPT, though he probably never imagined what we ended up with and why. kind of cool. there is even a plotline about how pretending to be those characters bites the AI in the ass, since they kind of take over it in a limited fashion through guiding its actions in an in-character way. idk i'm rambling.

i vibe with those ideas, though i'm a contrarian, so i fear i have to push back a little.. i think that we also try to make sense of ourselves for our own sake. in a particular situation, we decide how to behave based on what we consider to be virtuous, and what we consider to be in-character for us. if our goal is to be brave, and we have this fantasy of the brave person archetype in our heads, then we will consult it and try to be brave in a situation that calls for it. we might fail! but what we try will be determined by our identities.
