Multiple diocese have gone bankrupt from lawsuits and it has substantially cut into the Catholic Church's ability to grow, finance its operations, etc. It is a pretty big problem for the organization, so while there is also the "we want to be more progressive" angle, there is also a more practical "we have a problem we need someone to solve" angle.

I am of the opinion that the Church's centralized authority is part of why it is well known, I have zero doubt you see worse things at higher rates in all these bizarre disconnected protestant churches. And the Orthodox Church is basically just an arm of the Russian government at this point, with all the bad shit that entails.
